MOVIES • Emotionally stunning and beautifully realized, "12 Years a Slave" is one of the year's best movies — a tough subject, handled with skill and sensitivity. It's opening at several theaters in the Salt Lake Valley this weekend.

TELEVISION • Three days after Real Salt Lake eliminated the two-time defending champion L.A. Galaxy, RSL hosts the Portland Timbers in the first leg of the MLS Western Conference finals in a nationally televised game.

Other local sports • Men's college basketball gets under way on Friday with a couple of interesting games — Weber State at BYU (7 p.m., BYUtv) and USC at Utah State (7 p.m., CBSSN) — as well as Evergreen State at Utah (7 p.m., P12N). College football continues on Saturday with Arizona State at Utah (2 p.m., P12N); BYU at Wisconsin (2 p.m., ESPN); and Utah State at UNLV (6 p.m., ESPNU). And the Utah Jazz play Friday at Chicago (6 p.m., ROOT) and Saturday at Toronto (5 p.m. ROOT).
