Grade • A

DVD • Richard Linklater's "Before" films have been a revelation over the last two decades, checking in every nine years on one couple's life from first kiss through second thoughts.

The third installment, "Before Midnight," finds American author Jesse (Ethan Hawke) and French activist Celine (Julie Delpy) with two daughters, spending a summer vacation in Greece, and contemplating their love affair as they face their 40s.

The script — workshopped by Linklater, Hawke and Delpy — overflows with smart observations and some hard truths about the ideals and realities of romance. Hawke and Delpy, nearly 20 years later, continue to spark because they still make us believe in the possibilities of love. —
