Dining briefs: Chefs cultivate new roots, Moochie's comes to Midvale, Fassio goes natural

Six Salt Lake City restaurants will prepare menu items inspired by Utah's diverse community during Dining Around the World week. The chefs will prepare the dishes using produce from refugee farmers in the New Roots program. Proceeds will benefit the International Rescue Committee in Salt Lake City and the Utah Refugee Coalition.

Some of Utah's best pitmasters will compete for $25,000 in prize money during the Wild West BBQ Shootout this weekend in Wendover, Nev. The winner will get an automatic invitation to November's World Food Championships in Las Vegas to compete against other food and recipe contest winners. At the Wendover event, guests can buy tickets and sample ribs, pork, brisket and chicken.

Moochie's Meatballs and More has opened a second location in Midvale, offering the same signature Philly cheesesteak and handmade meatball sandwiches as its original Salt Lake City location at 232 E. 800 South.

Kneaders Bakery & Cafe is building a new flagship store in Orem, next to its founding location at 1990 N. State St. The new store is expected to open on Dec. 2, 16 years to the date when the Utah-based chain opened its first location. The original location will close after the opening. At 5,000 square feet, the new cafe will be more than double the size of the original and will offer additional space for classes and special events. Kneaders is expected to open six more store within the year, including in West Valley City and neighboring states.
Utah native Anthony Fassio has been named the new CEO of The Natural Gourmet Institute, in New York. The institute trains chefs and the public in using whole foods and locally and organically grown produce. Fassio, a member of Utah's Fassio Egg family, helped convert his family's fourth-generation farm to organic and cage-free eggs. Most recently, he has been chairman of Slow Food NYC, where he increased membership, doubled the operating budget and created a "Snail of Approval" program to promote restaurants.
