YouTube artists to stop in Utah for tour
With YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and Kickstarter, it's possible for musical artists to bypass record labels.
Pop artist Alex Goot, who brings the Alex Goot and Friends Tour to Salt Lake City on Tuesday, is doing just that.
"It comes straight from the fans," Goot said of how Kickstarter changes the playing field for new artists.
"My first album and the first song I play in the set is called 'Make It Up,' " Tsui said. "It's very much a celebration of the fact that I have no idea what I'm doing. I'm just doing what I love and sort of making it up as I go."
The album was released in May and funded through Kickstarter. Through the online fundraising project, Tsui raised more than $64,000, which was donated by 970 supporters.
The artists say they have benefited by collaborating.
"This new way of making it in the industry, which is a very self-made homegrown kind of thing, there's not a ton of people doing it. There's not a lot of rules," Tsui said. "It's been really helpful for all of us to learn from each other, and all become really good friends."
While Goot, Conard and Austin are no strangers to touring, Tsui is new and has "fallen in love with it."
"I've been making this music online for a couple years now. I've built up this huge international fan base of people, and it's great to connect with them through the Internet," he said. "But, getting to actually face-to-face perform for people and then meet people afterward is a totally different experience."
