Students and young adults are the target audience for the 2013-14 season for Salt Lake Community College’s Grand Theatre, according to Kate Ruefener, community outreach coordinator.
The first show of the season is "Fame," which follows teenagers as they audition for New York City’s High School of Performing Arts. The play will run Oct. 10-16. It will be followed by "Our Town," Thornton Wilder’s classic coming-of-age story, Jan. 23-Feb. 8.

From March 6-22, the Grand will offer "Once on This Island," a musical that combines "Romeo and Juliet" with "The Little Mermaid" and touches on diversity and how people can come together.
"We thought that was extremely applicable with our changing demography," Ruefener said.
The Grand Theatre will close its season with the comedy "Noises Off," a show within a show. It will run May 8-24.
While the goal is to bring younger audiences to the theater at 1575 S. State, Ruefner said, "All shows will also have appeal to the entire community."
Theater leaders are most excited about "Fame," because it is a newer musical, and "Once on This Island," because it is rarely performed in Utah. "It’s rarely done in Utah because it takes a lot of involvement from the audience," Ruefener said.
Dave Hansen, who acted in three of last season’s four shows, will be returning to direct "Fame"; Ashley Gardner Carlson, who acted in "Les Misérables" at Pioneer Theatre Company, will choreograph.
In addition to the mainstage productions, the Grand will continue its Backstage at The Grand series and a www.the-grand.org/events/theatre" target="_blank">concert series. Artists and dates will be named later.
