'Stars and Friends' showcases Utah talent
The "Utah's Stars and Friends" musical showcase offers a chance to see some of the state's most accomplished entertainers in a single night, including Jim and Gary Pike, two of the original members of the 1960s trio The Lettermen; Odyssey Dance Co.; and Grammy-nominated violinist Jenny Oaks Baker.
In all, more than 20 musicians and singers will perform at the fundraising event for the SCERA Shell Outdoor Theatre in Orem.
The Pikes will be performing in their band Reunion as a special tribute to Bob Engemann, a former member of The Lettermen and a longtime Provo resident. Engemann, who died earlier this year, was a Brigham Young University graduate who also worked as the Provo school's development officer. Through the years, he helped raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for major building projects and academic programs.
Baker, who received a Grammy nomination for her 2011 album "Wish Upon a Star: A Tribute to the Music of Walt Disney," will play three songs, including a classical take on Led Zeppelin's "Kashmir."
"It should be a really, really fun show," Baker said. "It's pretty different from what I've done before, so I'm excited."
Other performers include Dallyn Vail Bayles, who has toured internationally with Broadway productions "Les Misérables" and "Phantom of the Opera," as well as the One Voice Children's Choir.
Talk-show host Larry King will make an appearance via video feed.
