Utah chef competes on cooking show
Utah chef Viet Pham, co-owner of Forage restaurant in Salt Lake City, will be a contestant on the ninth season of "The Next Food Network Star," which premieres Sunday, June 2. The 12 contestants, who were announced last week, will be judged by Bobby Flay, Giada De Laurentiis and Alton Brown. A "focus group" of food fans will also weigh in. Pham, along with co-owner Bowman Brown, was named Best New Chef by "Food & Wine" magazine in 2011. He also is no stranger to TV. Earlier this year, he beat Bobby Flay on an episode of "Iron Chef America" and last year, he was the runner up on "Extreme Chef." He's not the first Utah resident to compete on "The Next Food Network Star." Kelsey Nixon of Ogden participated in season four and currently hosts "Kelsey's Essentials" on The Cooking Channel.
Wasatch Brew Pub renovation
Wasatch Brew Pub recently completed a $500,000 renovation, increasing the indoor seating capacity to 230 indoors by removing the Cantina Bar. The pub also has added a Saturday and Sunday brunch. New items on the daily menu include a roasted beet salad, fried oysters and a ABCLT and S sandwich (for avocado, bacon, chicken, lettuce, tomato and Swiss).

The Orange Hue, served at Salt Lake City's Copper Onion is Utah's best cocktail, according to the editors of New York Magazine. The magazine recently selected an original drink from each of the 50 states as a way to showcase America's cocktail revival trend. The Orange Hue is a vermouth-and-whiskey drink made with cinnamon and marmalade. The $10 drink is on the spring menu at the restaurant, 111 E. Broadway, Salt Lake City; 801-355-3282
Community ART Garden fundraiser
The Railyard Community ART Garden, is a new type of community garden that combines art and agriculture. The garden, donated by the Utah Art Alliance and located near The Gateway, includes 41 garden plots that individuals or groups can rent, for $25 to $45. The plots will be surrounded by murals, sculpture plots and a stage for workshops and art and music events. Artists for Local Agriculture, with backing from Slow Food Utah and Wasatch Community Gardens, created the garden which will open May 15. The group is holding a family-friendly fundraiser with food, music, live art displays and a silent auction featuring work by Utah artists.

One Sweet Slice recently opened a second store in Sandy. Besides custom cakes and cupcakes, the shop sells cake pops, French macarons, lemon bars and brownies. Co-owner and designer Janell Brown opened her first store in South Jordan eight years ago. In 2012, she won an episode of "Cupcake Wars" on The Food Network. Since then the company's popularity has grown which prompted the need for a second store.

Grilla Bites opens
in Salt Lake
Grilla Bites named for the grilled sandwiches the menu is built around recently opened its third location in Salt Lake City. The restaurant was started in Redding, Calif., by the president of an organic food company. It focuses on organic and local foods whenever possible. There also is a location in Snohomish, Washington.
The menu includes freshly made juices and smoothies, regular and vegetarian hamburgers, sandwiches and lasagna. Prices from $4.75-$9.50.
