DVD review: Inventive video-game comedy 'Wreck-It Ralph' packs a punch

Grade • A-

DVD • Disney's "Wreck-It Ralph" is up-to-date computer animation, but its soul is as old as an 8-bit video-game character.

Ralph, the title character (voiced by John C. Reilly), is the angry villain of a "Donkey Kong"-style arcade game who, after 30 years of smashing things and being defeated by the plucky Fix-It Felix Jr. (voiced by Jack McBrayer), decides he wants to be a hero — even if he has to jump to another game to do it.

After a stint in a violent first-person-shooter, Ralph lands in a candy-themed car-race game, helping the scrappy Vanellope (voiced by Sarah Silverman) win against the scheming King Candy (voice of Alan Tudyk, channelling Ed Wynn).

Loaded with nods to classic games from QBert to Sonic the Hedgehog, "Wreck-It Ralph" delivers clever humor, colorful design and some neat plot twists. It also gives Reilly and Silverman a perfect showcase for their comic vocal gifts.

The disc includes the Oscar-winning short "Paperman," a charming urban romance that debuted with "Ralph" in theaters. —
