New bar and a soccer star at Dick N' Dixies

The old Andy's bar at 475 E. 300 South may have been dark and dingy, but Will Bourne and Kirsten Fowler saw a lot of potential in the Salt Lake City establishment.

Over the past three years, they have worked to turn the place, now called Dick N' Dixies, into a quaint neighborhood hangout.

The most recent change is the refinished bar.

"Last year, we decided to refinish them on our own. That was a horrible idea," said Fowler. "Will managed to create the stickiest bar tops in town."

She jokingly compared them to fly traps, saying that patrons no longer leave skin or clothing behind.

During the first week in January, professional crews came in to sand, stain and apply epoxy. The result is a shiny, smooth wooden surface with a glossy touch.

The new bar isn't the only draw at Dick N' Dixies. There's also a photo booth in the corner, a pool table and regular visits by members of Real Salt Lake. The combination means only patrons who come early get a seat — latecomers should plan on standing.

"Our clientele really does consist of mostly neighbors and friends," said. Bourne. "Everyone that lives around us is great and they definitely keep us in business."

Brian Walz has been frequenting Dick N' Dixies for more than two years because it is conveniently between his work and home. "I consider myself a professional," he said. "I like to come early before the crowds get here."

The bar, which does not sell food, is especially busy on the weekends and whenever big acts play at Urban Lounge across the street.

While Dick N' Dixies has several televisions for sports fans, the game of choice is soccer. The bar has RSL paraphernalia on the walls and it is a stopping place for the players. "You almost always see one or more of them after a home game," said Bourne.

If cocktails are your thing, keep an eye on the features board for the newest creations. "Our bartenders are always coming up with new and fresh things," said Fowler. "We like to put a fun name to each drink." Such as the Don Draper, named after one of the lead characters in the AMC television show "Mad Men."

Now that the bar top is refinished, the next improvement is outdoor seating. Look for a small patio to emerge as the weather gets warmer.
