Journeys of Love

An honor for Richards
Patricia A. Richards, board chairwoman at Utah Symphony | Utah Opera, is one of four recipients of OPERA America's 2013 National Opera Trustee Recognition Award. According to OPERA America, the award recognizes "exemplary leadership, generosity and audience-building efforts."
Richards, a retired bank executive, was appointed vice chair of US | UO in 2004, shortly after the controversial 2002 merger of the Utah Symphony and Utah Opera. She was instrumental in hiring CEO Melia Tourangeau and Utah Symphony music director Thierry Fischer, and in negotiating the collective bargaining agreement with the musicians union on five occasions. Noting that Richards and her husband, Bill Nichols, donated $1 million to help start the arts organization's comprehensive campaign, the OPERA America news release quoted Tourangeau as calling her "a pillar of strength" who has "far exceeded any expectation of what a board chair should do for a nonprofit organization." In addition to her financial contributions, Richards volunteers her voice as a member of the Utah Symphony Chorus.
