Food briefs: Vote for the best vegan food cart, celebrate award-winning local food and sample Utah-made pine syrup

Street cart up for award

City Dogs, a Salt Lake City street cart that specializes in vegetarian and vegan food, is in the running for a Libby Award, an honor given by peta2, the youth division of PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.) The Utah food cart is one of four finalists in the Best Vegan Food Truck category along with trucks from Los Angeles, Austin and Chicago. Winners will be chosen based on several factors, including a public vote. Fans should cast their ballot at peta2.com before Monday, Dec. 17 at 1 p.m. Mountain Time. In all, peta2 will give Libby's — short for animal liberation — in 22 different categories from best vegan snack to best dairy alternative. The committee that selected City Dog praised the cart's chili cheese Dee Dog as well as the signature City Dog, topped with jalapeños, tomatoes, and pickled asparagus.

Good food finalists

Amano Artisan Chocolate, Orem, and High West Distillery, Park City, are finalists in this year's Good Food Awards, which recognizes artisan food producers for creating top-quality products that meet strict environmental and socially responsible criteria. Amano's Chuao 70 percent Dark Chocolate is one of 14 finalists in the chocolate category, while High West's OMG Pure Rye whiskey is one of 18 finalists in the spirits category. Awards also are given in seven other categories including beer, charcuterie, cheese, coffee, confections, pickles and preserves. During blind-taste tests, judges selected the finalists from a field of 1,366 entries, 40 percent more than last year, according to director Sarah Weiner. The winners will be announced in Jan. 18 at a ceremony at the San Francisco Ferry Building, and the products will sampled during a special marketplace on Jan. 19. Blue spruce syrup

Vermont has maple syrup, Alaska has birch tree syrup and now Utah has its own distinctive offering — pine syrup made from the sap of the Blue spruce — the official state tree. The eco-friendly pine syrup is being produced by Edible Wilds, a small Eden company based. The bottom branches of blue spruce trees are collected and the sap is boiled out leaving the tree intact, owner Steve Golieb said. "No tapping or drilling holes into the tree." The syrup comes in an 8-ounce plastic squeeze bottle and cots $10.80, which includes shipping and handling. A portion of sales will be donated to two nonprofit environmental organizations, Tree Utah and Project Lime. To order, visit ediblewilds.us.

Baklava for babies

Caputo's on 15th will be selling specialty Greek baklava, with 50 percent of the proceeds donated to help infants at The Road Home. The baklava will be made by Elif Ekin, author of the blog mostlyhappyjourney.wordpress.com. Her recipe was featured in Martha Stewart's Everyday Food Magazine and has been sold at the Downtown Farmers Market and The Tea Grotto. Ekin will have regular walnut baklava available, as well as specialty flavors such as chocolate/walnuts, almond/craberry and pistachio. Customers also can request regular, whole-wheat or gluten-free filo.
