GRADE • B+

DVD • Big changes arrive for The Doctor (Matt Smith) in "Doctor Who: Series Seven, Part One."

The first five episodes of this year's split season conclude with the tearful departure of married companions Amy Pond (Karen Gillan) and Rory Williams (Arthur Darvill), facing the creepy Weeping Angels through Manhattan.

The season begins with hints of things to come, reprising the nasty Daleks and sneaking a preview of super-sassy computer whiz Clara Oswin (Jenna-Louise Coleman, joining the show this Christmas). The five episodes here are uneven (the Western episode gets a bit silly, even by Whovian standards), but Smith's wry handling of The Doctor improves every year. —
