PopTop review: No horror in 'survival horror' game 'Resident Evil 6'

Video Game • After six main titles and several other spin-offs, the "Resident Evil" series of "survival horror" games has lost touch with its roots. This is less a tale of fear than a full-blown action set piece tainted by other successful games such as "Gears of War" or "Uncharted."

The latest sequel, "Resident Evil 6" (PlayStation 3, Xbox 360), takes that shift even further, throwing in game-play elements that feel more at home in epic third-person shooters or an action game like "God of War."

This time around, you play in one of four separate campaigns and control different characters, each fighting off hordes of zombies. But unlike the more suspenseful first two or three successful games, the sixth game unfolds like a series of clunky action scenes. Sure, some of it can be exciting, but where's the horror in "survival horror"? Making this game more accessible to as many gamers as possible has closed the door on those fans who made it a hit in the first place. —
