spotlight show » Stand-up comedian Kurt Braunohler is best-known for his work with writing partner Kristen Schaal, the wide-eyed comic seen in "Flight of the Conchords," "Bob’s Burgers," "30 Rock" and "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart." But soon he might garner as much attention as Schaal after he moves from New York to Los Angeles to pursue more acting and TV opportunities. Braunohler, who specializes in absurdity and whimsy, is stopping over in Utah this weekend on the way to Los Angeles in his stuffed Honda Civic, he said in a phone interview. The philosophy major turned to comedy after working for eight years as a job he hated (repairing computers) and is looking forward to pitching specials once he reaches Hollywood. "I have a lot of things to say," he said.

spotlight show » Alabama "hick-hop" rapper Yelawolf will bring his Slumerican Tour with special guests Rittz, Trouble Andrew, DJ Vajra and Prof to In The Venue. During a break during the shooting of a video with Blink-182’s Travis Barker, Yelawolf, 32, said his follow-up to his 2011 debut "Radioactive" will have him calling all of the shots. On his debut, he said, there were "too many Indians trying to be chiefs," with a result being too many guests and too many decisions made to appease his label, Eminem’s Shady Records. Yelawolf acknowledged that the incredibly eclectic "Radioactive" was "a learning experience," but his next album, tentatively called "Love Story," will be more representative of who he is. "My music and my future is what I want to do," said the Southerner.

spotlight show » The minimalist rock band The xx spent two years recording its debut album at night, and the trio’s Oliver Sim said in a phone interview that "we didn’t know anyone outside of the band would listen to it." He was wrong, very wrong, as the self-titled release was one of 2009’s most intriguing albums, with bombast and decorations scaled back in favor of delicately crafted arrangements. The band wasn’t an overnight success, as Sim and creative partner Romy Madley Croft had been writing songs since they were 15, later to be joined by Jamie Smith. "At 15, I wouldn’t have been able to handle [success]," Sim said. "I would have passed out." He still experiences stage fright, but to him it’s a bonus as the band plays songs from its new album, "Coexist." "It it ever becomes easy — that will be bad, because it will mean I don’t care," he said. John Talabot Live and 2:54 open the show.
