"Dominus," a post-apocalyptic short film by Salt Lake City director Arrius Sorbonne, is one of the five winners of Canon's Project Imaginat10n competition — hand-picked from 20 finalists by filmmaker Ron Howard and his daughter, actress-filmmaker Bryce Dallas Howard.
The user-generated contest tasked filmmakers to create short films inspired by a group of photographs.
Sorbonne, 24, shot the film in three days on a $400 budget, in part on the Bonneville Salt Flats.
Sorbonne's sister, Ellesse Sorbonne Balli, wrote the film. Ellesse's husband, Nathan Balli, was the cinematographer, editor and handled the visual effects. Other family members did production design and filled most of the cast.
Sorbonne, in a statement, said he is "thrilled at the prospect of meeting Ron Howard."
"Dominus" and the four other winners will screen at a red-carpet event in New York on Oct. 24. The five will be paired by films by celebrity directors: Actress Eva Longoria, actor Jamie Foxx, fashion designer Georgina Chapman, Twitter co-founder Biz Stone, and rock musician James Murphy (frontman of the defunct LCD Soundsystem).
