Volbeat formed in Copenhagen in 2001, with Michael Poulsen (singer, rhythm guitarist), Anders Kjølholm (bassist), and Jon Larsen (drummer) forming the core of the hard-edged group.
The ascent of the band in North America was seen when it supported Metallica on the North American leg of Metallica's World Magnetic Tour in 2009, as well as when Volbeat released its fifth album, "Outlaw Gentlemen & Shady Ladies," this April, debuting at No. 9 on the Billboard chart.
It was on this most recent album when Rob Caggiano, who was born in the Bronx, joined the three Danish members of Volbeat.
Caggiano had recently left Anthrax, and he was enlisted to help produce Volbeat's album.
"Michael called me to produce the album, because my schedule was wide open," Caggiano said.
The connection between the three members of Volbeat and Caggiano was forged immediately, despite different countries of origin.
"Two weeks in, they asked me to join," Caggiano. "I had to change my perspective from being a producer to band member."
Caggiano, who "loved old stories" of the Wild West of the 19th century, helped on the concept album with his native perspective. The album revolved around mythic gunslingers. Poulsen was obsessed with reading all about hangmen, lonesome riders and even Doc Holliday, so he wanted an album about that legendary time in America, Caggiano said.
Besides, Caggiano said, Caggiano himself identified with the stories. "I am a New York City outlaw," he said.
