September brings all kinds of performances on Temple Square, with five scheduled for the Assembly Hall and one in the Conference Center.
All concerts start at 7:30 p.m., are open to ages eight and older, and are free.
Tickets are only needed for the concert in the Conference Center. Friday and Saturday, September 6 and 7—Tanner Gift of Music 30th Anniversary Concert with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and the Utah Symphony and James Taylor in the Conference Center. Tickets are required. Ticket registration ended Aug. 5. A stand-by line for those without tickets will form at the North Gate of Temple Square. Friday, September 13—Pianist James Margetts will present an evening of piano classics in the Assembly Hall. Margetts, originally from Utah, is an associate professor of music at Chadron State College in northwestern Nebraska. Saturday, September 14—Carla Rae Cook, mezzo-soprano, will share a vocal program called "Genealogy through Music" in the Assembly Hall. She will be accompanied by an ensemble of vocalists, a string quartet, piano, and harpsichord. Her program will include sacred and classical German selections, a British piece by Samuel Barber, three Irish country songs, five Hebrew love songs, and Leonard Bernstein's "America" from West Side Story. Cook has sung leading roles with the Metropolitan Opera. Friday, September 20—A "Families Making Music" concert, featuring pianist Stephen and violinist Aubree Oliverson (Moon Light), with Andrew and Lily Oliverson also on strings, will take place in the Assembly Hall. The Oliverson family features 15-year-old Aubree, an international violin competition winner and Carnegie Hall soloist. Saturday, September 21—Pianist Del Parkinson will share an evening of the piano music of George Gershwin in the Assembly Hall. Parkinson is a professor of piano and keyboard chair at Boise State University. Friday, September 27—Helen Louise Baird, soprano, will present a program called "A Tribute to Motherhood" in the Assembly Hall. Her concert will feature songs from several generations dedicated to all types of mothers. Baird holds a master's degree in vocal performance and pedagogy from Brigham Young University, and currently teaches at the Utah State University extension in Tooele. In addition, 30-minute organ recitals are held in the Tabernacle weekdays and Saturdays at 12 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. Also, Mormon Tabernacle Choir rehearsals are open to the public in the Tabernacle on Thursday evenings at 7:30 p.m., as is "Music and the Spoken Word" on Sundays featuring the Mormon Tabernacle Choir when doors open at 8 a.m. and close at 9:15 a.m. for the 9:30 a.m. 30-minute broadcast.
