The Utah Museum of Contemporary Arts is losing its senior curator.
Aaron Moulton is leaving the Salt Lake City facility in July "to pursue further opportunities in the field," according to a statement issued by UMOCA this morning.
Moulton came to Utah in early 2012, and quickly made a mark on UMOCA. One of Moulton's biggest events is the inaugural Utah biennial, "Mondo Utah," the sweeping survey of unusual Utah art that will fill UMOCA's main gallery through December.
Moulton also curated last fall's "Battleground States" exhibition, which explored LGBT politics, sexuality and esthetics through several generations of artists.
Maggie Willis, UMOCA's interim director, said in a statement, "Aaron has been one of the driving forces behind UMOCA's success in the international art scene, and he has also been a huge supporter of our local artist population by including them in exhibitions alongside international contemporary superstars."
While a search begins for Moulton's replacement, assistant curator Rebecca Maksym will carry out future programming begun by Moulton. Those include two exhibitions set for 2014: A survey of Utah cult filmmaker Trent Harris, and a large-scale group exhibition looking at Danish migration in Utah.
