Kevin Nealon

Spotlight show • The 59-year-old comedian, a cast member on "Saturday Night Live" from 1986 to 1995 and the Showtime series "Weeds," is developing a TV pilot with his wife. In a phone interview, Nealon said the potential show will, like "Weeds," not have a laugh track. However, like "Weeds," it could have a "munchie track." The Connecticut native and California resident has been busy since departing "SNL," where he was one-half of "Hans and Franz" as well as Subliminal Man, Mr. No Depth Perception and the anchor of "Weekend Update." Besides touring, he wrote a book about having pregnant wife called Yes, You're Pregnant, But What About Me? His advice to expectant fathers: "You're not alone." He is considering writing another book. Until then, he continues to perform stand-up, hoping never to draw hecklers. When he does encounter them, "I start speaking very softly." Sallie Ford & The Sound Outside

Spotlight show • The headliner for Saturday's show at Urban Lounge is Thao & the Get Down Stay Down. But go early to check out the Portland, Ore.-based band Sallie Ford & The Sound Outside. Ford, the frontwoman for soul-influenced rockabilly band grew up in North Carolina, but headed West after high school graduation. "I thought about San Francisco or New York City, but those are so expensive," she said in a telephone interview. For a while, she worked at a bagel shop in the Portland State University food court, but quit when the buzz for the band built. During that time, she also developed key friendships with Portland's favorite sons The Decemberists. The Avett Brothers also were early supporters asking Ford and her band to open many dates. "They did so much for us," Ford said. The band is gradually gaining support, even though Ford acknowledged that one of her bandmates, who used to work on fishing boats in Alaska, would "make a lot more money fishing." The band will perform at Boise's Treefort Music Fest March 21-24.

Chelsea Grin

Spotlight show • This will be a homecoming show for Utah-based Chelsea Grin — which is the term used when a victim's face is slashed from the edges of the mouth to the ears. (Makes you grin thinking about it, doesn't it?) The deathcore band, known for its three-guitar attack, formed about four years ago when lead singer Alex Koehler was attending Valley High School in South Jordan. Last year the band played the entire Warped Tour and released a five-song EP called "Evolve." "This is the best lineup that's ever happened to this band," Koehler said of the sextet, which has seen a revolving door of members. The band is already writing a new full-length album, which Koehler promised will "push even farther than 'Evolve.' " Everyone in the band lives in Utah, and during this brief stop headlining "The Sick 2" tour, they plan to dine at La Frontera and taco carts, while cherishing the simple pleasure of sleeping in their own beds for a night. "As a child, you always hate where you live," Koehler said. Now, "there's nothing like home," and he is not being sarcastic. Guests on the tour include Attila, Betraying The Martyrs, Within the Ruins and Buried in Verona.

Movies • Listings by Sean P. Means

Disney meets L. Frank Baum, and the results are more spectacular than special.

"Oz the Great and Powerful" is a visually arresting prequel to the classic "The Wizard of Oz," exploring how the Wizard got to be the Wizard. Turns out he was a traveling carnival magician (played by James Franco) who ends up catching a tornado to the colorful land of Oz —where he tries to double-talk his way past an evil witch (Rachel Weisz), a good witch (Michelle Williams) and one who could go either way (Mila Kunis). Director Sam Raimi brings the flash and spectacle to this rendition of Oz, but there's not much charm on display. The casting is also uneven, with Weisz and Williams running rings around Franco and Kunis.

The other mainstream movie this week is the thriller "Dead Man Down," a darkly atmospheric revenge drama with some gaping plot problems. Colin Farrell stars as Victor, a mid-level hood for a crime lord (Terrence Howard) who's being bedeviled with cryptic messages plotting retribution for something. Victor meets Beatrice (Noomi Rapace), a woman who tries to blackmail Victor into helping her exact revenge on the drunk driver who crashed into her, disfiguring her face. Director Niels Arden Oplev (who helmed Rapace through the Swedish version of "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo") employs Farrell and Rapace well, and creates a sinister vibe that almost compensates for the craziness in J.H. Wyman's script.

The most chilling movie this week is actually a documentary: "West of Memphis," a stirring look at the case of the West Memphis 3 — three teens wrongly convicted of murdering three little boys in an Arkansas town. Director Amy Berg dissects how police errors, a zealous prosecutor and an inept forensics expert came together in a miscarriage of justice, and how dogged activism by the imprisoned men's friends and family (along with some notable celebrities) got the case reopened.

Another documentary this week is less involving. "Don't Stop Believin': Everyman's Journey" tells of Arnel Pineda, a Manila rock singer who was working clubs when his voice was heard by the members of Journey — just as they were looking for a replacement lead singer. Pineda's story is fascinating, but director Ramona S. Diaz messes up the delivery with poor organization. The result is a valentine to the band, interesting only to Journey's diehard fans.

Lastly, "Emperor" is a dishwater-dull historical drama, centering on the efforts of a U.S. general (Matthew Fox) to find evidence to exonerate the Japanese emperor Hirohito of war crimes at the end of World War II. Tommy Lee Jones pops up as Gen. Douglas MacArthur, but his saltiness can't spice up Fox's performance or director Peter Webber's stuck-in-neutral pacing.
