DVD • Amazing? Not really, but "The Amazing Spider-Man" is a solid start to this rebooted franchise. Andrew Garfield is a bit too hip as Peter Parker, the high-school nerd whose encounter with a genetically altered spider gives him wall-crawling superpowers — and draws the attention of scientist Curtis Connors (Rhys Ifans), a former colleague of Peter's mysteriously AWOL father (Campbell Scott).

The great supporting cast includes Emma Stone as feisty love interest Gwen Stacy, and Martin Sheen and Sally Field as Peter's guardians, Uncle Ben and Aunt May. Director Marc Webb ("(500) Days of Summer") creates action sequences that are energetic but haphazard — but he'll have chances to do better in the sequels. —
