The San Diego-based rock band Switchfoot is finally getting the chance to pair its love of music with its love for surfing.

The band is filming "Fading West," a documentary that chronicles its worldwide tour as well as surfing along the way.

"It's U2's 'Rattle & Hum' meets 'Endless Summer,' with a little 'Dumb & Dumber' thrown in," said the band's 38-year-old drummer, Chad Butler.

With modern-rock radio staples such as "Meant to Live" and "Dare You to Move" still being played, the band can afford to bring surfboards on tour.

Butler remembered a time when the band members, on their first European tour, slept in the streets with their instruments and surfboards so they could afford to surf in the south of France and other exotic locales.

The doc, as well as an accompanying soundtrack with new songs, is planned for release in July. Paper Route opens.
