The annual Art Meets Fashion event merges the worlds of fashion design and fine art in support of local causes. This year's event will be al fresco at Red Butte Gardens on Saturday, Sept. 8.

This year Red Butte Garden is the chosen beneficiary of proceeds from ticket sales and art sales. Organizers are hoping the unusual venue will attract a new audience. The evening offers a fashion show, a fine art exhibition, performance art with a swing band and dancing on the amphitheater stage.

"This is quite a labor of love for us," said Anne Cummings, who along with Heidi M. Gress is producing Art Meets Fashion 2012. "We've received pretty significant sponsorship [for the event] that includes audio and visual, the decor and food and wine."

Attendees can expect an elegant evening with a 1940s old Hollywood feel that showcases the beauty of the gardens, she said. Guests will receive a program with a map to guide them to the food, art and fashion show.

Instead of runways, models will wander the lower paths in the Rose and Wedding gardens. "It's going to have a unique feel," Cummings said. "Our local fashion designers have created a full line of clothing — about 20 to 40 complete outfits — designed for specifically for this show."

The designers are Beckett and Robb, Sophie St. Claire, Nephi Garcia and Heggy Gonzalez.

At the Rose House Plaza, the "Metamorphosis" exhibit will feature paintings, mixed media and photography displayed on panels and easels. One artist, David Marshall Habben, said he chose to use the symbol of the number eight in combination with a snake consuming itself in his work.

"Both have been used throughout recorded history to symbolize rebirth, creation, baptism and renewal of self, purpose, and thought," he said. "For me, this is the great metamorphosis of life. Nothing in our lives stays the same."
