DVD •If you're going to copy Michael Bay, as director Peter Berg does in "Battleship," you should at least hope it's done with tongue planted firmly in cheek. Alas, this overblown action movie, which stars Taylor Kitsch as a rebellious Navy officer who winds up commanding a destroyer pitted against invading aliens (that shoot peg-shaped ammo), mixes elements of Bay's action-movie oeuvre with a lot of noise but not much wit.

The cast — which includes Liam Neeson, singer Rihanna and supermodel Brooklyn Decker — was seemingly chosen out of a Mad Libs game. Alas, playing an actual game of "Battleship" is more intellectually challenging, and more fun. —
