Heartless Bastards perform this coming weekend. The alt-country-influenced rock band Heartless Bastards are returning to Utah for the first time since ringing in the New Year at The State Room seven months ago. Erika Wennerstrom, the leader of the band, now calls Austin home, after growing up in Ohio. Living in Austin, Wennerstrom said in a Tribune interview, made it easy for the band to play at this year's South by Southwest festival — and they took full advantage of it. Despite playing 11 shows in 10 days, the band relished sleeping in their own beds, she said. What made that rigorous scheduled endurable was her company. "I'm really happy with the band I have now," said Wennerstrom of the band, which has seen plenty of turn-over through the years. "Musically, I'm connecting more than I ever have. The more you connect with the musicians onstage, [the more] it comes across to the crowd." Little Hurricane is also on the bill.
