Utah Original Writing Competition winners to read from their works

The Utah Division of Arts & Museums has announced the winners of the 2011 Utah Original Writing Competition. Awards were given in the following categories: novel, biography/autobiography, short story and collection of short stories, young adult book, poetry and essay.

On Wednesday, June 27 at 7 p.m., the authors will read from their winning entries. The event will be held at the Chase Home Museum of Utah Folk Arts in Liberty Park, 900 S. 700 East, Salt Lake City. A public reception will follow.

Among the readers is Lance E. Larsen, Provo, Utah's new poet laureate. He won first place for his biography/autobiography, Seventeen Ways to Float, and his short story, Ode to Milk.

Other first place winners are: James W. Ure, novel; Larkin G. Weyand, collection of short stories; Michelle Renee Stimpson, young adult book; Danielle Beazer Dubrasky, poetry; and Erin R. Jackson, essay.

Call for entries

Applicants are being sought for the 2012 Utah Original Writing Competition. Writers of fiction, nonfiction, and poetry in the form of short stories, essays, poems, and full-length manuscripts for readers of all ages are invited to apply. The competition is open to all Utah residents and there is no charge.

All works must be original, not published nor submitted for publication at the time of entry.

The deadline is 5 p.m., Friday, June 29.
