Four artistscuriously, all from Utah Countytake the walls of Finch Lane Gallery June 22 in an exhibit that united three of them in a group show. Self-described "stay-at-home prophet" Vance Mellen, meanwhile will take the solo show with works in mixed media, sculpture and video.
Recipient of an MFA in film direction from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Mellen sees his work for this exhibit as an exploration of possibility through the "what is" and "what might have been."
"While I fancy myself an Old Testament prophet, living off locusts in the wilderness, warning nations to repent in columns of fire, I know that I'm merely a stay-at-home dad, trying to keep my toddler alive. I attempt to discern repeating patterns in chance, order in chaos, which can sometimes 'reveal the inner workings of the mind of God," Mellen says in press materials for the exhibit.
If that sounds too heady by half, take in the exhibit's group show of works by Catherine Downing, Tawni Shuler and Nancy Steele-Makasci. "The Power of Place," promises an intoxicating mix of works depicting our various relationships to environment through painting, mixed media and printmaking.
