Remember this business maxim: Never let a controversy go to waste.
The folks at Ogden's Own Distillery were quick to take advantage of the dispute over their Five Wives Vodka, after the state of Idaho banned the brand from its shelves and from special orders — apparently fearful of complaints from Idaho's Mormon population over the label's polygamous theme. (Here's a report on the dust-up, by the Tribune's Dawn House.)
(Never mind that Utah's liquor bosses approved the label of five women holding kittens over their nether regions - and that Idaho had no problem with Wasatch Brewery's Polygamy Porter.)
Ogden's Own on Tuesday started selling T-shirts, emblazoned with the Five Wives logo and the words "Banned in Idaho" across the front. On the back, the shirts feature the same photo - with the women behind bars, and the caption "Free the Five Wives."
The shirts sell for $14 each.
