Michael Huff has a prime directive for Utah Voices, the Davis County-based community chorus he conducts: "No boring concerts."

This week's Utah Voices concert, he said, is guaranteed to keep audience members involved.

"Instead of being handed a program and listening quietly, they'll get a bingo card and golf pencils," Huff said. Each card will include the evening's song selections, arranged randomly. The performance order will be determined by random drawing, as in a regular game of bingo, and audience members will receive prizes for filling in a row of five on their cards. A 10-piece band will accompany the singers.

"There will be medleys and songs from Broadway shows old and new," Utah Voices marketing director Bronwyn Evans said. Musicals represented on the program include "The Pirates of Penzance," "Beauty and the Beast," "Sweet Charity," "Sunday in the Park With George," "Porgy and Bess," "The Phantom of the Opera" and "Mary Poppins." Banter from co-hosts Kelly DeHaan and Jennifer Hohl, plus the occasional solo selection, will keep things lively, Evans said.

Huff won't be around to enjoy the fun; his day job as director of special programs and visiting assistant professor in the Utah State University music department is sending him to China. DeHaan, Utah Voices' associate conductor, whom Huff called "one of the great showmen in our fair city and state," will step in.

Last year's "Broadway Bingo" concert was so popular that Utah Voices added a 9 p.m. show — which sold almost as well. "People had a heck of a great time," Huff said. "Bingo is fun." No encore show is planned this year.
