That’s the question animating both "The Thousand and One Nights" and Brigham Young University’s website byuarabiannights.com, collecting community responses to match. It’s also the grand prompter behind BYU’s department of theatre and media art’s stage adaptation from Mary Zimmerman’s "Arabian Nights."

Playing through June 9 at Pardoe Theatre, the play is meant to complement the unversity’s current exhibit of Islamic art "Beauty and Belief." As a classic of world literature, however, it’s of course strong enough to stand on its own. With an emphasis on Scheherazade’s seemingly endless striving to stave off death by the hand of her suitor, BYU’s production directed by Megan Sanborn Jones promises a luminous night out at the theater. Karli Hall stars as Scheherezade.
