GRADE • A-

CD • Norah Jones has been dismissed as background music at dull cocktail parties. But on her new album "... Little Broken Hearts," out this Tuesday, the 33-year-old daughter of Ravi Shankar has teamed up with super-producer Danger Mouse to create a dark, atmospheric collection of songs that reveal the singer's deeper, more emotional side.

There are no "Don't Know Why"-style hits on this startling, synth-heavy departure rife with haunting details of a cudgeled relationship. Her voice has never been more evocative than on songs such as "She's 22," where she coos spookily, "Does she make you happy?"
