'Course 86B in the Catalogue' panel discussion at SLAC

Kathleen Cahill's newest creation, "Course 86B in the Catalogue," is a heady mix of comedy and biology, all wrapped up in chewy drama involving two romantic pairs where women take center stage. One is a current-day paleontologist and the other is a 19th-century prairie girl. The story takes place in the unnamed American Southwest, most likely Utah. All this might be hard to digest in one play, yet it's not, thanks to Cahill's deft hand. Since virtually every play goes better with a panel discussion, especially one featuring the author, Salt Lake Acting Company has gathered three local experts in science, teamed with Cahill and with moderator Terry Gildea, KUER's news director. The panelists are Kristen Hawkes, distinguished professor of anthropology at the University of Utah; Carolyn Levitt, paleontologist at the Natural History Museum of Utah; and Anya Plutynski, associate professor of philosophy at the U., who is a specialist on the history and philosophy of science.

When • Panel discussion today, 4 p.m. Play runs through May 6; 7:30 p.m. Wednesdays-Saturdays; 1 and 6 p.m. Sundays.

Where • Salt Lake Acting Company, 168 W. 500 North, Salt Lake City

Info • Panel discussion free. Tickets for play $15-$38. Call 801-363-7522 or visit http://www.saltlakeactingcompany.org for more information.

Center Point Legacy Theatre's 'South Pacific'

At 60, "South Pacific" remains a rare gem in the canon of musical theater. Its staying power is such that almost everyone has an opinion about it. Does it reflect the worst elements of naivete, with its overriding emphasis on love-at-first-sight on an exotic island? Or does it mark the moment musicals came of age, with its open confrontation of racism amid one of the most vicious wars ever fought? Everyone has an opinion. Regardless of disagreements, everyone carries a soft spot for its songs, including "Some Enchanted Evening," "Bali Ha'i" and "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Out of My Hair." Center Point Legacy Theatre's production directed by Jim Christian features Laila Welch as Ngana, Landon Cole Welch as Lt. Joseph Cable, Kevin Burtenshaw as Emile DeBecque and Lindsea Garside as Nellie Forbush.
