Slam poetry winner

Salt Lake City poet DeAnn Emett finished 12th in the International Women's Poetry Slam in Denver. More than 70 poets who "live their lives as women" competed from March 7-10. Listeners are invited to hear Emett compete with ten local poets next week for a spot on the 2012 Salt Lake City team who will compete in the National Poetry Slam in Charlotte, NC, in August.

Burma political documentary

Bo Kyi, a former political prisoner in Burma and co-founder of the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners-Burma, will present the sobering documentary "Into the Current: Burma's Political Prisoners." The film, directed by Jeanne Hallacy, sheds light on Burma's military regime. Kyi also will elaborate on the changes needed to move Burma toward democracy.

Poetry of math

Katherine Socha, director of education policy at Math for America, will give a poetry-inspired lecture to explain how math is everywhere, and that you don't have to be Stephen Hawking to understand it. Her lecture, "Maggie and Milly and Molly and May," will demonstrate the construction of a perfectly symmetrical, five-point paper star, explain how bubbles conserve energy and how symmetrically (or not) animals and humans move on land.

Autism awareness

Tom Fields-Meyer will discuss autism awareness. Fields-Meyer wrote Following Ezra, about his experience as a parent of a child with autism. A group of panelists also will weigh-in on the topic, including Doug Goldsmith from The Children's Center; Sam Goldstein, editor-in-chief of Journal of Attention Disorders; and Pete Nicholas from the Carmen B. Pingree Center for Children with Autism.
