If you ever tire of friends who tell you musical theater has no smarts backing up its sentiment, take them to see "The Drowsy Chaperone."
Similar to Michael Frayn's "Noises Off," this musical by Lisa Lambert, Greg Morrison and Bob Martin and Don McKellar boasts a play-within-a-play structure. Here's the idea: Broadway musical fan "The Main in Chair" plays the sound track to fictional musical "The Drowsy Chaperone," when right before his eyes the very musical itself unfolds, with showgirl Janet Van De Graaff about to marry an oil tycoon while ironing out the growing complications of her starring role in the show "Feldzieg's Follies." While all this takes place, "The Man In Chair" finds unexpected corners of his life confessed to himself while sitting in his lonely apartment.
As the record plays on, we get such wonderful songs as "Accident Waiting To Happen," "Toledo Surprise," "As We Stumble Along" and "Love Is Always Lovely In The End." The musical premiered 1998 in Toronto, becoming the toast of Canadian theater before moving to Broadway, where it won the Tony Award for Best Book and Best Score. Center Point Legacy's production features an alternating cast directed by Maurie Tarbox, staged at the Davis Center for the Performing Arts in Centerville.
