Running a farm and marrying your daughters off in accordance with Jewish tradition ain't easy in pre-revolution Russia. It's even more difficult with Cossacks knocking at your front door.

"Fiddler on the Roof," a musical by Jerry Bock, Sheldon Harnick and Joseph Stein, has been justly famous since the 1964 day in opened on Broadway. With the 1971 film version unleashed on the world, it was in everyone's Main Street movie theater, then the living room DVD player.

Few musicals elevate their subject matter the way this one does, right down to the heartbreaking moment the village rabbi tells everyone they must wait for the Messiah somewhere else.

Dixie Stage College's Theatre Department offers its take on a musical classic, March 1-10 in St. George.
