On Saturday, May 12, at 8 p.m., the unprecedented pairing of Kid Rock, Maestro Leonard Slatkin and the men and women of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra will take the stage of Detroit's historic Fox Theatre for a one-night only fundraising concert to raise critical funds for the legendary orchestra.
The idea was originally conceived by Kid Rock and Rock Ventures Founder Dan Gilbert to help save the DSO.
"As a musician, and of course a Detroiter, I am proud to be supporting this longstanding cultural institution," said Kid Rock in a press release. "And while I know these ticket prices are more than what my fans are used to paying, I am confident that whatever happens when we put the Twisted Brown Trucker Band, a 80 piece orchestra, and 'Bawitdaba' together will be well worth the price of admission."Kid Rock, the Fox Theatre, Leonard Slatkin, and the DSO are volunteering their services for concert.
All proceeds from the concert will be directed to the DSO.
The musicians of the DSO went on strike on October 4, 2010, in a labor dispute. On February 19, 2011, DSO management announced it would suspend the remainder of the 2010-2011 concert season, when the musicians rejected a final offer. After a six-month strike, an agreement was reached on April 3, and concerts resumed April 9, but patrons haven't been coming in droves since the mess splashed across the headlines.
