If you know Brooklyn-born writer Patricia Reilly Giff at all, it may through her Polk Street School series of books published in the 1980s and on through to 1997. Centered around the second-grade class of Ms. Rooney, with central characters Emily and Stacy Arrow, Giff’s books accomplished the tall order of making stories about school actual adventures in life and growing up.
It’s her 1998 Newbery Honor book Lily’s Crossing that Giff might be best remembered for, however. Set in 1944 in the thick of WWII, the drama revolves around young Lily Mollahan, who lost her mother at a young age. As her friends and father enlist in war efforts, only later does she discover the core of love and support she feels amid the tumult and change remains steadfast. It happens when she meets Albert, a Hungarian refugee her own age who’s lost as much as she has, if not far more.
