Don’t be fooled by the name of this band: This won’t be a concert of the kind of bluegrass music that provided the kick in the Coen Brothers’ "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" Rather, O’Brother is an experimental hard-rock band led by brothers Anton and Johnny Dang.
They launched the band 14 years ago with Anton’s best friend in seventh grade, drummer Michael Martens. The group’s debut album "Garden Window" was released to widespread acclaim last month, and in an interview Martens said the band is looking forward to playing the small Kilby Court for the second time. "We grew up playing rooms like that," Martens said. Now a sextet, the group has expanded to include a singer and third guitarist, and together they tour the world relentlessly. "When you play 200 shows a year, you have no choice but to become tighter," Martens said.
With more time to play for this Kilby Court gig, Martens is excited about playing jams from "Garden Window," such as "Cleanse Me," which on the record clocks in at just under 14 minutes. "A 14-minute song doesn’t work in a 30-minute set," Martens said.
