There’s no mistaking John Logan’s talent for screenplays and screenplay adaptation. His adaptation of Brian Selznick’s children’s book "Hugo" has earned him an Oscar nomination thanks to Martin Scorsese’s blockbuster film.

His 2009 play "Red," on the other hand, is far afield from the world of children’s stories, delving deep into the mind of famed abstract expressionist painter Mark Rothko. Convinced he can transform the Four Seasons Restaurant atop New York City’s Seagram Building into a "temple" through the burning intensity of his huge murals, he paradoxically clings to the notion of a mass audience as illusory.

Salt Lake Acting Company’s production, in riveting direction by Keven Myhre, pairs Morgan Lund as the great painter with Ted Powell as his doe-eyed, but stealthy, assistant, Ken. It’s a thorough, bracing examination of what motivates great artists, drives them to the brink, and what gets passed down to the next generation of artists as a result.

Salt Lake Acting Company will host a free panel discussion of the play that’s sure to enrich your understanding and appreciation of Logan’s unique drama. Moderating will be Pat Shea, a respected attorney and Rothko fan. Joining him will be Maureen O’Hara, artist and assistant professor of art at the University of Utah, whose works currently hang in SLAC’s Green Room Gallery during the theatrical run of "Red." Artists John Sproul, Cara Despain and Kenny Riches fill out the participants for this late afternoon event.
