In Japan, the word for informal discussion and networking or what we’d might call a "gabfest" is pecha-kucha.
Almost a decade ago, Tokyo designers held a Pechakucha Night, where they informally exchanged ideas between disciplines, traded business cards and generally chewed the fat (where did that idiom come from?) on the field’s issues and innovations.

Since then, Pechakucha Night has spread to cities worldwide—including the isolated outpost of design we like to call Salt Lake City.
PKN Salt Lake City is hooking up this year with the professional design association AIGA to throw a Pechakucha bash at The State Room. Presenters include fine artists Gary Vlasic, Mark Knudsen and David Ruhlman, and architects Bill Arthur, Prescott Muir, John Branson and Tim Lee, senior exhibit designer for the Utah Museum of Natural History.
When you consider that the design business encompasses everyone from architects to fashion queens to grungy video-game creators, these chit-chat sessions can be extremely stimulating, not to mention tremendous fun.
