Scott Carrier is Utah’s own H.L. Mencken. Smart, opinionated and articulate but also stubborn and often brutally frank, he’s traveled the world to report on some of its most intractable conflicts, most notably in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

It’s a fortunate turn of events for Salt Lakers, and all Utah denizens, that he eventually turned his attention on his home state as well. Carrier’s new book of essays and nonfiction stories, "Trapped in Zion," mixes both of his best sides. One part personal reflection with real-life narratives into Utah culture, and one part meditation on the geo-political world beyond our valley, the collection effortlessly blends both the Beehive state and global events into a whole that’s surprisingly cohesive. More important, it’s always compelling reading.
