(Trent Nelson | The Salt Lake Tribune) Scott Carrier is Utah's own H.L. Mencken. Smart, opinionated and articulate but also stubborn and often brutally frank, he's traveled the world to report on some of its most intractable conflicts, most notably in Afghanistan and Pakistan. In a new book of essays and nonfiction stories, "Trapped in Zion," the Salt Lake City native mixes personal reflection with real-life narratives to offer an insightful look into Utah culture and the geo-political world beyond. Carrier was photographed at his home in Salt Lake City, UT, Wednesday, October 19, 2011.
