The day we feared might never arrive is here - the Utah Jazz open the 2011-12 NBA season in Los Angeles against the Lakers (8:30 p.m., TNT).

To make up for lost time - and to squeeze in as many games as possible - this is the first of four games in five nights and six games in eight nights. That's what happens when you have a work stoppage that stretches on for months.

Given the alternative, which would have been no season at all, this lockout-shortened season looks pretty good.
