Music notes: Folk music Mondays and a free opera concert

USU Alumni Band

Utah State University's Alumni Band kicks off its 2011 summer concert series today with a concert on the Quad. Band members are graduates or USU students who performed with the music department's top band. Between 60 and 70 musicians will perform at each concert throughout the summer.

Folk music Mondays

Mondays in the Park hosts a performance by Shanahy, with band members Kate MacLeod, Mark Hazel and Bronwen Beecher. The group focuses on Celtic music and dance primarily from Scotland and Ireland, playing instruments such as the Scottish lowland bagpipes, fiddles, higland pipes, flutes and bodhran. The group has released three CDs, "Trip to Ballymena," "Far Away" and "A Fair Land Lies Before Me."

Until the fat lady sings

The Utah Symphony and Utah Lyric Opera will give a free performance, with a program including operatic scenes from "Die Fledermaus," "La bohème," "The Marriage of Figaro," "Carmen" and "The Barber of Seville. Guest artists include Melinda Ammons, Darrell Babidge, Millinee Bannister, Christoper Holmes, Isaac Hurtado, Chad Millar and Jennifer Welch-Babidge. David Cho will conduct one of his last concerts with the orchestra before departing for his new positions at the Lubbock Symphony and Rice University.

An unplugged concert

The Performer Studio presents "LIVE and Unplugged!", a concert featuring students and musicians from local band Light Vizion. They'll perform covers of pop songs by KT Tunstall, Cee Lo Green and Carrie Underwood.
