Collision of art, science and gelato

Drawing on a unique combination of skills, local artists Kelley Somer and Mark England present their work in "Cherish Me." Somer has a degree in physiology with an emphasis in fine art. In addition to her work as a full-time artist, she is a medical illustrator for scientific journals. England holds degrees in painting and drawing from Brigham Young University. A true artist, he also sells gelato at 9th and 9th in Salt Lake City.

It's art! It's floor wax!

Painter Jerry Hardesty, influenced by abstract expressionists, uses palette knives, paint scrapers, trowels and squeegees, rather than brushes, to apply many layers of paint and, yes, Pledge Acrylic Shine floor wax. The result is varied textures and a feeling of depth. Hardesty will greet visitors during a Gallery Stroll reception, Friday, May 20, 6-9 p.m.

Smithson's love affair with Utah

Writer and art educator Hikmet Sidney Loe will discuss how Utah history and culture influenced Robert Smithson in creating his iconic earthwork "Spiral Jetty." Loe's book on Smithson and the Great Salt Lake, The Spiral Jetty and Rozel Point: Rotating Through Time and Place, is due out next year. While you're at the UMFA, check out the exhibition on Smithson's impact on a generation of artists worldwide.

Another sign of spring

The annual Spring Open Exhibition, sponsored by the Utah Watercolor Society, is open to watercolorists statewide and includes styles from landscape to abstract. An awards presentation will be held during the May 20 Gallery Stroll.

Money for local arts

Utah Division of Arts & Museums is accepting applications for Local Arts Agency Grants. These grants support funding to ensure that "the cultural, civic, educational and economic benefits of the arts are accessible to every community in the state." Matching funds or partnerships are required to be considered.

Volunteer for art

The Utah Arts Festival is looking for volunteers for the June event at Library Square in Salt Lake City. A total of 1,000 volunteers are needed in areas from building stages to painting faces. The four-day festival draws more than 150 visual artists, 100 performing artists and 80,000 arts lovers.
