Celebrating May Day

Sine Nomine Consort offers a concert in honor of a traditional worldwide celebration. "A-Maying We Will Go" is an hourlong free May Day program. Music will highlight the beauty of spring and the coming of summer, as well as works and songs on themes of love, springtime, birds, flowers and dancing.

Madeleine Festival begins

The 2011 Madeleine Festival begins today, with performances continuing every Sunday at 8 p.m. through June 5. (See story on D2.) Here's the schedule:

Sorenson Young Artist Concert

Utah Chamber Artists presents its annual Beverley Sorenson Young Artist Concert, which features pianist Richard Marshall performing Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2. In the spirit of looking back over the past 20 years, conductor Barlow Bradford has chosen to showcase Marshall, who spent most of those years as the ensemble's pianist. Other close friends and collaborators of UCA whose music will be performed on the concert are Robert Cundick, Bernell Hales, Dale Warland and Tarik O'Regan. (See story on D2.)

Beehive Statesmen Chorus

The Beehive Statesmen Chorus is presenting its annual spring concert. The program, "Barbershop Styles," will highlight the sounds reflecting many of the themes available in the barbershop style. The chorus presentation will highlight quartet and chorus music with guest quartet the Beehive Statesmen Chorus.

Choral Festival 'bouquet'

Temple Square Performances kicks off its Choral Festival this week.

When • Friday, May 6, 7:30 p.m., "A Spring Bouquet of Art Songs" will feature 18 vocalists who will perform works by Amy Beach, Michael Head, Samuel Barber, Edward MacDowell, Roger Quilter and John Ireland. Pianist Lawrence Gee will accompany.

When • Saturday, May 7, 7:30 p.m., the Madsen Family Strings performs as part of "Families Making Music." On the bill is work by Dvorák, Kreisler, Vivaldi and Rachmaninoff.

Symphony to feature organist

The Utah Symphony welcomes Mormon Tabernacle principal organist Richard Elliott for a concert featuring Saint-Saëns' "Organ Symphony," one of the most iconic and commonly performed works for organ and orchestra. Elliott also will perform Poulenc's organ concerto, under the direction of Andrew Grams. Stravinsky's "Scherzo Fantastique" rounds out the program. (Read more about Elliott on D4.)

Vibraphone Concerto

The American West Symphony of Sandy will present "Meet the Vibraphone" featuring the Vibraphone Concerto by Brazilian composer Ney Rosauro. This will be the work's first performance in Utah. Vibraphone soloist will be Lynn Brown, timpanist with the American West Symphony. The program will also include the Polonaise from Tchaikovsky's opera "Eugene Onegin" and Beethoven's Seventh Symphony.
