Dance this way

The University of Utah's modern-dance department presents a spring concert featuring its Performing Dance Company. On the bill are works by faculty members Eric Handman, Satu Hummasti, Sharee Lane and I-Fen Lin, as well as Andrea Miller, Salt Lake native and founder of Gallim Dance in New York City.

Tribune dance critic Kathy Adams praised all the works on the program. Handman's "No Perfect Human" is an arresting piece, she writes, with steps that become elaborate motifs, leading to unfamiliar territory. Hummasti's "Never Let Me Go" etches a haunting story from childhood memories of joy and grief. Lane's duet "The Realm of the Interior" combines the classic line of ballet with classic sensibilities of early modern dance; I-Fen Lin's unmistakable style re-emerges in "Spell Bound," with an authenticity that challenges the young U. dancers to rise to a new level of performance. And Miller's "Chanson" blends abstract and theatrical dance for a chilling look at heroism and revenge.
