Driving Utah to abstraction

An exhibit of the art of Don Olsen will commemorate the birth centennial of one of the most ground-breaking abstract artists to have worked in Utah. "Don Olsen: Abstracts from Nature" features 10 large-scale paintings produced over a 25-year period. Olsen studied art at Brigham Young University and the University of Utah, and later worked as an art teacher at several Utah high schools and at the College of Southern Utah. Even though he won art-world awards, local viewers often criticized Olsen's abstract expressionist paintings. He traveled to New York, Boston and Provincetown to stay on the cutting edge of 20th-century art, but always returned to Utah.
