Salt Lake cityscape

A description like "before and after" doesn't do justice to Cecile G. Paskett's photo documentary "Eastside/Westside: After-images of Salt Lake City." It reeks too much of weight-loss remedies and diet lingo. What Paskett offers instead is a "reconstructed panorama" look at the Glendale and Sugar House neighborhoods of Salt Lake City. The aim is to jolt our perceptions of what we expect when we look at the familiar sights of a city we think we know. A master of arts student at the University of Utah's department of communication, Paskett shot her images using a plastic camera to produce what she calls "slightly discordant junctures." See your hometown again. For the first time.

Say it with leather

If intermission has always struck you as that great pit of lost time between two acts of theater, then you already know the reason behind Pioneer Theatre Company's Loge Gallery. This fall's production of "Hamlet" has found its visual art pairing in both the leather mask creations of John Thompson and Vandy Marcotte, plus the modern abstract works of painter Jeffrey Hale. Thompson is a leather-crafter of the self-taught school, with Marcotte picking up the detail work. Hale also describes his style as self-taught. His works on display here cover his latest paintings and those dating back three years.

When • Through Oct. 2, during the run of Pioneer Theatre Company's "Hamlet." Gallery hours are Monday-Friday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m.-noon.

Where • 300 S. 1400 East, mezzanine level of the Loge Gallery of Pioneer Memorial Theatre on the University of Utah campus, Salt Lake City.

Watching the cloth

Salt Lake City native Nathan Florence experienced a short-lived longing for medical school before settling on art. It wasn't fabric's proximity to gauze bandages that led him to paint on cloth, however. Instead it was the problems painting on fabric created, and the solutions that followed. His current exhibit at Kimball Art Center in Park City, "Fabricated," abounds in the kind of pleasant surprises of texture, form and style you'd expect from an adventurous personality. Armed with an art degree from Swarthmore College, with a stint studying art in Todi, Italy, Florence has also traveled to Calcutta, India, where he came across many of the fabrics that have found their way onto his recent work.

When • Through Oct. 3. Gallery hours are Monday-Friday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, noon-5 p.m.

Where • 638 Park Avenue, Park City.
