Mallet on the Arab-Israeli conflict

The Forum of Questioning Minds presents a lecture by Chibli Mallet, a University of Utah law professor who specializes in Middle Eastern law and politics. He will discuss the possible misdiagnosis of the conflict between Arab-Israeli groups and how it could be considered a civil war. Mallet ran for president in his native Lebanon in 2005-2007.

The Mount Olympus of Utah landscapes

Utah Museum of Fine Arts presents a lecture by associate curator Donna Poulton. "Painting Utah's Mount Olympus" will discuss the famous local mountain, as well as works of it by local artists. The featured paintings span roughly 150 years, created by such artists as Lee Greene Richards, Gilbert Munger, Edwin Deaken, and David Meikle. The exhibition will run through Nov. 14.

Words and music

Writer Maximillian Werner and musician and performance artist Ken Critchfield will read and perform from their works. Werner teaches writing at the University of Utah, and is an Academy of American Poets prize winner. Critchfield is a psychologist, bassist and composer, whose work involves experimental forms.

Deafness and literacy

Westminster College presents a diversity lecture about "Documenting Deaf Lives: Exploring Identity, Literacy and Relationships." Brenda Jo Brueggemann, professor at Ohio State University, will discuss the her theory of deaf identity or "betweenity" that many hearing impaired or disabled people struggle with.
