Trevor Southey: Reconciliation

Few Utah-based artists can boast of a richer life than Trevor Southey. Born in Africa, educated in England, and a Mormon convert and art instructor at Brigham Young University, he acknowledged himself as a gay man later in life and then rose to prominence as one of the most celebrated figurative artists of his time. Locals will no doubt always remember Southey best for "Flight Aspirations," his 1982 painting at the Salt Lake International Airport that blemished Utah art history with a rare case of censorship. Throughout it all, and up to his recent diagnosis with prostate cancer, the painter remained true to his one abiding passion: painting the human form in the full spirit of mystery and, above all, beauty. The Utah Museum of Fine Arts' retrospective captures all that, and no doubt a whole lot more given the span of this Utah original's long artistic life. Southey may now spend the majority of his precious time at his Bay area home in California, but he's still a Utah original in many ways. There will be plenty to drink from in this exhibition. Drink it deep.

'Honeymoon'

Marriage is an extremely long, dull meal at which desert is first served. Or so said Voltaire, who of course never had the chance to meet Kristin Calabrese and Joshua Aster. Two internationally renowned painters based in Los Angeles who recently tied the knot, they set out to explore the texture, expectations and vexations of married life through art. The result, "Honeymoon," is an exhibit that compares and contrasts the figurative images of Calabrese with her better half's vigorous abstract works. Whether or not they make a compelling union is for viewers to decide, even if everyone knows that few marriages can truly be known from the outside looking in.

Open up

Before the large-scale discovery of the American Southwest, landscape paintings were something of a predictable affair. Idyllic, pastoral scenes abounded. Once accustomed to certain techniques, skilled painters had no problem producing respectable product. The razor-sharp light and agoraphobia-inducing vistas of the Southwest changed the rules. Chronicling those responses is the Brigham Young University Museum of Art's "Wide-Open Spaces: Capturing the Grandeur of the American Southwest." This is two exhibitions in one. The first is a stunning collection of 80 paintings by early 20th-century artists grappling with a new subject, and succeeding in spades. The second, for those who know a thing or two about painting, is a virtual master-class in framing elements, use of horizontal lines and revolutionary employment of color palette and shadows. Nothing was quite the same in landscape art after these painters set eye on the American Southwest. This exhibition shows us the why, and the how.
